Don’t let your child feel that he can “control” what he eats.  Choose meals for your child based on nutrition and not what he wants to eat.
  • Your child may be scared to try new things. New foods can be scary for a child.  If your child is a picky eater, it may be out of fear of the unknown.
  • It could be genetics. It is true that taste buds are genetically determined.  If you don’t like a certain food, chances are that your child will not like it either. Perhaps the picky eating habit was passed down through the generations.
  • Too much fast food. Introducing your child to tasty fast food can quickly turn him away from nutritious healthy food and develop a picky eater.  Avoid giving your child too much fast food and encourage him to eat new and different foods.
  • Too many sweets. If you have a junk food eater on your hands, he or she will often refuse to eat anything else. Don’t give in to this.  Cut back on the junk food in an effort to correct a bad eating habit.  Junk food will only lead to an unhealthy lifestyle and increase your child’s chances for obesity.
  • Is the television interfering? Children will often refuse to eat because they are more interested in what is going on with their favorite television show. Turn off the television during dinner time and require that your child eat before he watches it again.
