10 Pregnancy Tips for Working Mothers

Pregnancy often changes things. One thing is does not change, however, is the fact that some mothers have to stay employed while being pregnant.  Although it probably should be, pregnancy is not a “get out of work” pass.  Many mothers have to deal with the hardships that often come with pregnancy while maintaining employment. The following are a few pregnancy related tips that can make your experience as a working mother-to-be a little bit better.

  • Inform your employer. While you are not required by law to inform a potential employer of your pregnancy, it can be very helpful to let your current boss know that you are expecting.  This will allow him plenty of time to get a Plan B in place for when you have to take maternity leave.  Be sure to inform your employer as soon as you find out the big news.
  • If you need a less strenuous position, ask for it. One of the perks of being pregnant is that you can take it easy for a while. If your position involves heavy lifting, as your boss for a less strenuous position.
  • Put your baby and your body first. Make a commitment to yourself that you will not put you nor your baby in any danger.  Put your baby and your body first. Explain to your employer that you will not do anything that may put your baby at risk. They will understand.
  • What is your company’s policy for maternity leave? While the baby won’t be here for quite some time, go ahead and familiarize yourself with your company’s policy on maternity leave.  How long will you be able to take off?  Will you need to find someone to take your position while you are gone? Know what to expect as far as maternity leave.
  • Be sure that you are comfortable in your work environment.  Pregnancy is often anything but comfortable.  You will be spending a lot of time in your work environment. Do your best to make it as comfortable as you possibly can. Get an extra comfortable chair that will adjust with your growing body. Pillows and cushions may also add to your comfort level.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.  The clothes you wear to work will make all the difference.  To increase your comfort level, wear comfortable clothing.  Avoid wearing high heels. Flowing, loose dresses are often a great solution.
  • Make an effort to reduce stress at work.  If you job is particularly stressful, this can be bad for the health of your baby. Do what it takes to help reduce your stress at work.  A lot more time to get things done so you aren’t stressed by time constraints.  How can you reduce the amount of stress you are under at work?
  • Use your break time to take walks. Walking is very healthy during your pregnancy. It increases the amount of oxygen your baby gets.  During your break time, walk the halls of your office building.  This will also serve to help beat the tiredness that is often associated with pregnancy.
  • Keep snacks on hand to beat nausea.   The first trimester of your pregnancy can be filled with mornings of nausea. Keep your desk drawer filled with snacks that will help you beat the nausea.  Crackers, bread, and fresh fruit and veggies are all good choices in keep on hand to help beat the nausea.
  • Enjoy your pregnancy. Working will without a doubt be a challenge in your pregnancy. If you can’t afford to quit and stay home, find ways to enjoy your pregnancy at work.  Keep sonogram pictures, a calendar or your due date, and weekly updates on the progress of your bundle of joy posted.  This will serve as a reminder of the miracle that is taking place inside of you.  Find ways to make your pregnancy more enjoy at work.
